Therapy FAQ’s: Centers of Excellence

What are the post-delivery responsibilities for a MyoPro Center of Excellence (COE)?

Consistent follow up with both the user and their therapist is essential to good outcomes. Some COE’s may have a specific check-in schedule e.g. 1 week post-delivery, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months etc. COE’s must be prepared to go on-site with therapists and answer their questions and provide support.

What training and support is available to therapists?

All training and support are provided in collaboration with the providing O&P clinic.

  • Myomo will provide pre-delivery online training to therapists (90-min live webinar) and supply them with a therapy manual, HEP templates, donning videos and access to recorded training modules. Online training is primarily focused on educating the therapist on the PERL Functional Training Progression and how to use the MyoPro in therapy.

  • COE is responsible for ongoing post-delivery support as needed, including on-site assistance. COE’s should be prepared to provide training to therapists on donning/doffing, how to operate the MyoPro and Myconfig software.

My candidate is not currently in therapy, do you have a database of trained therapists?

Yes, Myomo can share a list of therapists trained in your candidate’s area.

What happens if there isn’t a trained therapist within a reasonable distance to my candidate?

Your patient/you will need to identify a therapist who they would like to work with, and who would be willing to learn about the MyoPro.

Therapists should

  • be excited and willing to take time to learn about the MyoPro

  • be able to provide 1:1 sessions (45-60min)

  • have a background in neuro-rehab

Therapists can be either OT or PT, a background in prosthetic training is a bonus!

A therapist referred their patient for a MyoPro, what should they focus on in therapy prior to delivery?

Tone management/reduction, increasing PROM, shoulder strengthening, UE muscle activation and isolation (specifically biceps, triceps, wrist/finger flexors and extensors), edema management.

This information will be presented during your evaluation training.

Are CEU’s available for training?

CEU’s are not currently available for MyoPro online training. However, Myomo Inc is an AOTA Approved Provider of CEU’s for live courses. We can collaborate with an O&P COE to provide a 1hr in-service or a longer (2-4hr) on-site course for groups of therapists.

What is the role of a therapist working with a MyoPro user?

Therapy is critical to success with a MyoPro and every user should engage with a therapist right after delivery. Once a therapist has been trained on the MyoPro and Myconfig software, their role will include:

  • assessing and facilitating MyoPro donning/caregiver training,

  • assessing the patient’s movement in the MyoPro and facilitating improved muscle activation and coordination

  • implementing an appropriate MyoPro treatment protocol based on the patient’s presentation, needs and goals. We provide treatment guidelines for the therapist to follow, but clinicians have discretion around customization of this program and any adjunct treatments

  • establishing an HEP for the patient

  • functional task analysis, helping the patient progress to functional training wherever appropriate and empowering them to use the MyoPro at home.

How often and how long should a MyoPro user see a therapist?

Most MyoPro users see a therapist x2 -3 days/wk for approximately 10 weeks (15 – 20 sessions). However, weekly frequency is set by the therapist and the user and will depend on the number of treatment sessions available, how far the user has to travel to see the therapist and how fast the user progresses in their training.

The overall duration of the episode of care is also left to the discretion of the clinician.

Is therapy included with the cost of the MyoPro?

Therapy is not included in the price of the MyoPro. Therapy will come out of the patient’s existing benefit package. Patients will need a referral and script from their doctor for OT/PT and will incur their regular co-pay for therapy visits.

How should a therapist bill for a MyoPro therapy session?

The most common codes used by clinicians include neuromuscular re-education, therapeutic activities, self -care and orthotic training/management.

What are common functional goals?

The MyoPro can provide powered active assistance for elbow flexion/extension and hand grasp/release. Gross motor, functional tasks including basic ADLs, IADLs and community, work or leisure tasks may be appropriate. A lot of training focuses on bilateral tasks, with the MyoPro assisting the sound side. Each MyoPro user will have different goals and different functional capacities depending on their mobility, proximal strength, level of hypertonicity etc.
