AUSTIN, Texas and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (December 19, 2016) — Ottobock, a world market leader in technical orthopedics, and Myomo, Inc., a leading manufacturer of myoelectric orthotics,

have reached an agreement for Ottobock to exclusively distribute the Myomo ® patented MyoPro® orthosis technology globally, starting with select markets in North America and Germany.

The MyoPro is a custom orthosis, based on technology developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, that has been prescribed to help support and restore function for people who have a paralyzed arm as a result of a stroke, spinal cord injury, nerve damage such as a brachial plexus injury, or progressive conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”).

the first and only advocacy organization formed to specifically address the unmet needs of young adult stroke survivors and their caregivers, today announced a partnership.

Myomo will work with YoungStroke to expand awareness of YoungStroke’s education and advocacy programs through conference presentations, social media marketing, and research collaboration. Together, both organizations will work to increase available resources to the young adult stroke community.

Each year, approximately 30% of people who suffer a stroke are under age 65. This number now exceeds 50% in parts of America’s Stroke Belt region where stroke mortality consistently ranks highest in the nation. Increasing prevalence of risk factors for stroke, such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity, are contributing to alarming rates of strokes occurring in young adults.

Too many young stroke patients experience misdiagnosis and delayed access to care. Stroke also poses particularly devastating financial and physical burdens for young survivors as they face overwhelming challenges to regain independence and return to their professional roles and family responsibilities.

The MyoPro Motion-G is the first powered orthosis to enable both elbow flexion/extension and grasping function. The innovative elbow-wrist-hand orthosis is based on decades of work in myoelectric orthotics and prosthetics, including building on myoelectric research conducted by the VA Medical Center, West Roxbury, Mass. in 1990.

The Motion-G is the latest innovation in the company’s MyoPro line, which enables people to initiate and control movement of a partially paralyzed arm using their own muscle signals.

“The Motion-G now makes it possible for people with upper extremity paresis to grasp and release, opening up new possibilities to manage daily tasks and live more independently,” said Myomo CEO Paul R. Gudonis.

Sensors built into the custom device detect EMG signals in the bicep/tricep and forearm. The signals are amplified when a user initiates movement, driving small motors that help flex and extend their elbow and open and close their thumb and fingers for 3-jaw chuck grasp capability. The device also enables users to articulate their wrist manually.

A clinical study underway shows promising early results, according to Dr. Stephen Page, principal investigator for the study. The study will measure the approximate changes in subjects’ ability to successfully perform functional tasks with the device.

“We expect that this study will demonstrate that wearing the Motion-G significantly improves the ability to perform valued daily activities, and that the amount of active movement that people are able to attain during these activities increases as a result of wearing the device,” Page said.
