Exercising the Brain After Stroke

Stroke survivors know the importance of physical exercise; working on strength and endurance training, balance and fine and gross motor skills are keys to recovering loss of physical function after a stroke. But frequently it isn’t just someone’s body that is affected by a stroke or other neurological injury.   Cognition – the ability to think, process, remember and focus – can also be affected. Stroke survivors will often see speech and language therapists to help strengthen these skills as well as their communication skills. Our brains also need to be exercised and strengthened, and it’s not just important for people who have had a stroke. Anyone can benefit from simple exercises that can help strengthen memory, concentration and problem solving skills.

Three Inspiring Stories of Stroke Survivors

Stories that inspire:
Wanted to share with you the next three amazing recovery stories. These survivors all share one thing in common, they worked hard, they worked hard and they worked hard to recover. Sure, they partnered with smart people and used innovative technology to help them, but the bottom line is to recover like these survivors working hard and continuing to work hard is the key.

Mark Stephan
Mark Stephan, a successful Chicago businessman was on one of his typical bike rides up the shore of Lake Michigan when a pot hole abruptly jolted him.  This caused his bike to flip forward and for him to land on his next, fracturing it and resulting in a spinal cord injury.  His rehabilitation started slow. He had little movement in his limbs.  However, Marc was determined to do what he needed to do to recover. He worked with top researchers and therapists in the field and did not give up, period.  His success has been so great; he spent the summer biking across the United States to raise money to help others with injuries like his.
